Security and Shredding

People have a justified concern about security and thus shredders have become a necessary machine in everyone’s household. However, caution should be taken as to what is shredded and when. I have found that many seniors shred bank statements, cancelled checks and other financial information too quickly after it is reviewed. This is often due to lack of room in their homes, or assisted living apartments, or perhaps due to the fear of identity theft and other security reasons. Believe me, I am not suggesting that this fear is misplaced. However, although the IRS may have certain guidelines as to how long documentation should be maintained, when a long-term care need is required, sometimes information for the last five years or more may necessarily have to be produced. When banks merge, are bought, or perhaps change names, this information is very difficult to reproduce. So before you shred, think about alternative safe solutions to storing your financial records.
